Well on several occasions, while picking produce from our garden, Lily would express a desire to taste the "baby" peppers and we then had to explain to Lily that these peppers were hot and if she didn't want to get burned she needed to leave them alone. Usually Lily listens to our warnings about things that could hurt her but I suppose she figured something so small couldn't really hurt her...
I was in my room folding some clothes and I could hear the kids playing on the side of the house and they're giggling and laughing but then their giggling and laughing starts sounding forced and slightly unsure. Then I hear Lily say "Oh! Momma I need a drink, I need water!" I figured they must be eatting dirt, something they've been doing lately, and she must want to wash her mouth out. So I head outside with her sippy and find that she's topless :( her and Caleb have been naughty lately and like to strip outside so I hand her her water and go in search of Caleb cause he's the worse of the two as he likes to get completly naked, where as Lily is simply content to run around without her top on.
Sure enough Caleb had nothing on, not even a diaper so I'm trying to get him dressed when Lily starts crying and saying her eyes are burning. I look up at her and she's rubbing her eyes pretty fierce, so I tell her to stop rubbing and to come to me so I can check her eyes. In the mean time Caleb is getting whiney and acting agitated. I finally pry Lily's eyes open can't see anything and that's when I see the broken up bits of serrano chili peppers on the ground. I ask Lily "Did you pick these peppers?" and through her tears she says "Yes."
I run Lily inside, wash her hands off with quite a bit of soap and and then try and rinse her eyes out with cold water. Doesn't do a thing, she's crying and saying its still burning and I can hear Caleb crying outside so I go let him in and I'm trying to think of what else I could do to stop Lily's eyes from burning when Caleb starts pulling at his pants and crying real good so I figure I must not have shaken out all the rocks in his diaper when I put it back on him outside so I undress him (thinking I'll quickly fix his problem and then only have one screaming child). However upon undressing him I quickly discover that he must have been playing with the peppers too cause boy is he red down there. So I throw him in the tub wash his hands and body with soap cause I don't want him to start rubbing his eyes and end up like Lily who is still crying and I don't know what to do so I quickly Google remedies and come across the answer...MILK! So I strip Lily down put her in the tub with Caleb and I'm pouring milk on both of them and in Lily's eyes and it worked! Now it did take a minute or two but it worked.
Lily downing a glass of milk. After her eyes stopped stinging I think she became aware that her mouth was still burning so we used more milk to solve the problem.
Poor thing had red circles around her eyes for several hours after the incident but thankfully they weren't burning for that long.
Caleb feeling much better after his milk bath :)
Another remedy is baking soda, for those of you who may need it in the future, Lily the poor thing had to soak one of her hands (my guess it was the culprit hand) off and on that afternoon in a water/baking soda solution as Lily kept complaining that "it's hot!" I guess some kids just have to learn the hard way and Lily has definitely learned the hard way to NOT touch those "baby" peppers. As for Caleb let's hope he's learned his lesson to keep his clothes on, as they do provide some protection from those dangerous serrano peppers.
The Serrano bush that is no more...When Eric got home and heard what happened he went outside and ripped it up, just to be on the safe side.
